Fab Lab Machines List

The list basically boils down to these machines:

  • Laser Cutter: Epilog Mini 24″ x 12″ 35W laser cutter (http://www.epiloglaser.com/)
    other labs use e.g. Epilog Legend EXT, 900 x 600 mm, 60W, CHF 50k (incl. ventilation); Spirit GX, 960 x 460 mm, 40W, EUR 22k; Trotec Speedy 300, 720 x 430 mm, 30W, EUR 25k)
  • CNC Router: Closed Loop ShopBot, consisting of PRSalpha 96-48-6, Crtl Box, HSD 4HP 220V spindle, Router Bit Starter Kit (http://www.shopbottools.com/)
    other labs use e.g. BZT-PF600, 300 x 500 mm, EUR 1,7k (excl. spindle); VK-Technik, 600 x 800 mm, EUR 7,7k (incl. spindle)
  • Milling Machine: Roland MDX-20 (http://www.rolanddga.com/); EUR 3,4k
  • Vinyl Cutter: Roland GX-24 CAMM-1 SERVO vinyl cutter (http://www.rolanddga.com/); EUR 1,7k
  • Electronics equipment: soldering station, 150 MHz digital storage oscilloscope, DDS function generator, DC power supply, magnifier light (approx. EUR 1,5-1,8k)
  • Video conferencing: either Logitech HD Pro Webcam C910, 1080p, with echo-cancelling; headset; speaker system; video projector — or dedicated video conferencing station (Polycom or LifeSize), approx. EUR 1,5k
  • Control computers: per machine 1 PC with keyboard, mouse, screen; dual boot *nix (e.g. Ubuntu) and Windows
The lab needs work benches and matching chairs, you probably want a coffee corner, etc.
A 3D-printer is on the wish list of many makers; quite a few labs use RepRaps, MakerBots or Ultimakers.
